Mr James Speirs was born in South Africa and completed his bachelor's at Rhodes University. He then completed his master's in philosophy at the University of KwaZulu-Natal examining Nietzsche and Sartre. He has lived in São Paulo, Kuala Lumpur, and Beijing. His interest in cities prompted him to complete a second master's examining urban governance. He has taught at Beijing Normal University and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
