Programme Highlight

Currently, the School offers the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Language and Culture, Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Language and Liberal Studies, Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Translation Technology,  Bachelor of Education (Honours) in Early Childhood Education and the Higher Diploma in Early Childhood Education.

The BA (Hons) in Language and Culture

Emphasising the closely intertwined relationship between language and culture, the degree is carefully designed to scaffold students to explore a range of topics from linguistics to communication, from literature to culture. Central to the degree is the interdisciplinary study of language and culture, which allows students to critically synthesis language and cultural issues by considering the dynamic and dilemmas crosses different disciplinary boundaries.  Upon completion of the programme, graduates are well-equipped with interdisciplinary knowledge of language and culture, professional workbased skills and manner. Graduates can utilise their sound understanding and theoretical knowledge of language and culture in a variety of professional fields.  

The BA (Hons) in Language and Liberal Studies

Intersecting language, literature and the humanities, the degree offers 3 streams of concentration:

  1. Bilingual Studies
  2. Chinese and Philosophy
  3. English and Communication

Through subjects such as linguistics, communications and philosophy, students will graduate with a broad knowledge base and understanding of the world. Graduates will possess the ability to process, interpret, synthesize and evaluate information through an analytical lens; skills that are highly sought after, both in the workplace and academic settings. In this world where specialists seems to be the trend, our graduates who are "Generalists" will bring about the balance and make imperative contributions to complement the "Specialists". Graduates can potentially work in these areas.

Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Translation Technology

While artificial intelligence (AI) can generate text rapidly, high-quality cross-cultural communication still requires human professional judgement. Linguistic conventions, cultural subtleties, emotional undertones, political sensitivities, religious issues and strategic intentions across different contexts all require professionals with both linguistic proficiency and cultural insight to ensure accurate final processing.

First-class teaching staff: Professor Chan Sin-wai, world-renowned scholar in the field of Techno-humanities, former professor and head of the Department of Translation at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, who has published over 100 works on humanities and technology; Dr Qian Duoxiu, author of the award-winning textbook Computer-Aided Translation and former associate professor and founding head of the Department of Translation at Beihang University in Beijing; Dr Yeung Wing Lok, computer specialist who previously taught at several universities in the UK; and Dr Lin Qiuhan Hannah, who specialises in integrating cutting-edge technology with humanities teaching and research.

Bachelor of Education (Honour) in Early Childhood Education

Multiple modes of delivery suits for those who are interested in early childhood education.  Apart from the content relating to Child Development and Child Studies, the Programme also offers a wide scope of topics relating to taking care of young children with special or diverse educational needs, parent-school collaboration, etc.


Higher Diploma in Early Childhood Education

The two-year programme will equip students with an in-depth understanding of the roles and responsibilities of early childhood educators. Throughout the course, students will learn to analyze the current cultural, social, political and economic factors that affects the development of early childhood education in Hong Kong. Coupled with our school's commitment to professionalism and moral ethics, graduates will be able to readily identify children's diverse needs and develop suitable strategies and approaches to their learning process.

Graduates from this stream may pursue a vast range of careers in public, private and academic sectors that include but not limited to corporate communications officers, promotions and public relations professionals across all industries, civil servants in various government departments, middle management staff across all industries, media editing and journalistic staff with television and radio stations, newspapers and magazines, teaching and research staff with schools and academic institutes, and any other occupations that demand highly proficient English language and communication skills.

Career Prospects for Graduates from the Stream of Chinese and Philosophy

The provision of a broadly based liberal arts education with emphasis on Chinese and Philosophy enables graduates from this stream to be well-equipped with transferable skills, such as communication, creative thinking, logical reasoning and sensitivity to cultural diversity, skills which are highly applicable to a wide range of occupations and industries. In fact, graduates from this stream will have a broad selection of jobs in different areas including education, media, civil service, public bodies and China-related business organisations. Alternatively, they may also further their studies in related disciplines and engage in research work upon graduation.

Career Prospects for Graduates from the Stream of Bilingual Studies

With sound communication skills in both English and Chinese, graduates from this stream may choose to work as public relations and communications officers in their preferred areas, such as the financial and commercial sectors. With proper training in producing bilingual texts, graduates can work as editors, copywriters or translators to provide language services to the media, language service agencies or private companies. They can also work as research assistants in the academic field to help in language-related research. As graduates are able to distinguish the salient differences between English and Chinese, they are capable of working as academics teaching language courses to adults and children, especially to second language learners of either Chinese or English.

Graduate of BA (Hons) in Bilingual Studies 

Every lecturer at CIHE gives me ample guidance in and out of class, further enriching my knowledge. Take the Basic German course I took one semester as an example. Initially, I had hesitations about taking this course as the German language was a total alien to me. Thanks to the instructor, who used songs and maps to aid the teaching of basic grammar, I understood the German culture much better. The project work for this course involved planning a trip to Germany. In the data collection process, my teammates and I were like travelling all over the country, fully understanding its historical background. What a fascinating way of teaching and learning!

Apart from textbook knowledge, CIHE brings me a unique experience on campus. Thinking that participation in more extra-curricular activities meant a larger social circle for me, I became a committee member of last year’s joint CIHE and CBCC Student Union. Besides organizing various activities for my fellow schoolmates, I also represented them to communicate with the college authorities. As the Internal Secretary, I was able to put the linguistic skills I acquired in class to practical use. I benefitted greatly from working for this important student body, with the Japanese exchange tour organized by the Student Affairs Office being my most memorable experience. My teammates and I designed our own learning theme and itinerary, and we had face-to-face interactions with local people to experience their unique culture. I am grateful for all the resources and opportunities provided by my college. Thank you CIHE!

Graduate of  BA (Hons) in Chinese & Philosophy 

All courses were lectured either in English or Cantonese. As Mandarin is my mother language, languages would be the primary task that I have to overcome. I am glad that I have received many supports from Caritas. For instance, Cantonese and English courses were arranged by the Language Centre. Other than that, Dean, Program Leader and other lecturers of the School often communicated with us and provided us advices to enhance our language skills. Under their assistances, I have made great progress in both English and Cantonese skills.

Teachers here are knowledgeable and open-minded. For examples, Dr Kwan's facial and body expressions combined with his fine sense of humor has made profound Western philosophy more approachable for us; Dr Ying's Chinese philosophy lectures had merged abundant Chinese traditional culture into current events around us. As for Dr Roger's logic lectures, difficult logical theories and concepts became more interesting and simple through his significant paintings. Different inspirations have come to me after having lessons by these authoritative scholars.

Through these two years of studies. besides gaining knowledge, I can feel the sense of caring and sympathies sharing among each other.
