In general, applicants who either possess sub-degree qualifications or have completed one year of study in degree programmes at local or overseas universities recognized by CIHE may be considered granting Advanced Standing. Advanced Standing gives applicant credit for his/her prior study and is granted in consideration of the relevance of the student's general learning experience. It enables a study period to be partially shortened.
Applicants do not need to apply for Advanced Standing, and the process is initiated by the Institute/College. The exact number of Advanced Standing credits to be granted depends on the level, the performance and the degree of contents matching of the prior study and is subject to the final decision of the Academic Head with justification(s) and the endorsement by Registry at admission.
Students may also apply for Course Exemption from taking any individual course if they have obtained qualifications/learnings which are recognised by the Institute as equivalent to those offered by the Institute.
For Course Exemption, it will be granted on a course-by-course basis. Applications must be made in the prescribed form "Application for Course Exemption" together with supporting documents such as course outline and syllabus.
Overall speaking, not more than 50% of the credit requirement for the academic award may be transferred from any approved tertiary institute and CIHE reserves the right not to grant Advanced Standing / Course Exemption for courses which do not correspond to the courses offered by a CIHE degree programme. For the approved Advanced Standing / Course Exemption, no grade will be given but credits will be granted for fulfilling the number of credits for graduation. Students should also note that such credits will NOT be included in the calculation of Grade Point Average.
