Saint Francis University Launches Centre for Applied Ethics to Bridge Different Values in the Age of AI
14 May 2026
Saint Francis University (SFU) announced the official establishment of the Centre for Applied Ethics (CAE). Rooted in positive moral values and drawing on Chinese humanistic traditions and religious humanitarian traditions, the Centre aims to promote interdisciplinary dialogue to address contemporary global challenges.
The Centre will focus on six major areas of ethics, including technological development and human dignity, business ethics, healthcare ethics, bioethics, social ethics, and environmental ethics.
President Professor Cheung said that in an era of rapid globalisation and technological advancement, the younger generation must place greater emphasis on the inheritance of Chinese culture and positive values. The establishment of the CAE creates a valuable platform for dialogue, enabling different sectors of society to explore the shared values and ethical foundations among cultures in greater depth.
Father Arturo De la Torre, Director of the CAE, said that through this dialogue, the Centre aims to guide students in navigating the complexities of the modern world by cultivating an international outlook, while drawing wisdom from the rich heritage of Chinese culture and religious traditions, grounded in a firm moral foundation.
To integrate ethics education into professional training, the Centre will work closely with SFU's academic units to comprehensively review programme curricula and incorporate professional ethics teaching as a core component of courses, cultivating students' ethical discernment, moral judgement, and sense of professional responsibility.
In addition, SFU is actively preparing to launch a Master of Arts in Ethics and Religion as an academic extension of the Centre's vision, with the aim of nurturing future leaders with strong ethical literacy for society.
