Research Highlights

This project presents A Comprehensive Topical Chinese–English Dictionary, a six-volume reference work comprising 4,365 pages. Developed for learners, educators, and the general public with an interest in Chinese language and culture, the dictionary systematically organizes over 4.84 million words and expressions into 954 thematic categories, spanning a wide range of everyday and specialized domains.

In contrast to conventional Chinese–English dictionaries that arrange entries alphabetically or by pronunciation, this work adopts a topic-based structure. This innovative organization enables users to engage with vocabulary in meaningful contexts, thereby enhancing both linguistic comprehension and cultural understanding.

The project addresses significant limitations in existing bilingual lexicographic resources, particularly the scarcity of large-scale, user-friendly, and thematically structured references. By integrating linguistic precision with rich cultural insights, the dictionary functions not only as a practical educational tool but also as a platform for fostering cross-cultural communication between Chinese- and English-speaking communities.

Ultimately, this publication represents a substantial advancement in bilingual dictionary development, offering one of the most extensive and accessible resources available for the study and appreciation of Chinese language and culture.
