Biography
Dr Theresa Lai graduated from the School of Nursing of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and received her Master of Nursing and Doctor of Health Science in Hong Kong Polytechnic University. She has become a registered nurse (Nursing Council of Hong Kong), registered midwife (Midwives Council of Hong Kong), qualified aromatherapist (International Federation of Aromatherapist), clinical hypnotherapist (International Medical and Dental Hypnotherapy Association), advance care planning certified facilitator (Respecting Choices ACP), a fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Nursing (Education & Research – Education) (Medical Nursing – Palliative) and specialized in palliative care.
As an experienced palliative care nurse with extensive training exposure in Hong Kong and the United Kingdom, Dr Lai is an expert in handling terminally ill patients and their family members using holistic approaches. She has designed and delivered a range of nurse training programs at different levels and became a Convenor of Specialty Advisor Group (Palliative Care) of Hospital Authority. She was elected as chairperson of Hong Kong Palliative Nursing Association, vice-president of Hong Kong College of Medical Nursing, guest editor of Annals of Palliative Medicine and ex-council member of Asia Pacific Hospice Palliative Care Network. She was a Nurse Consultant (Palliative Care) of the Hospital Authority and the Head Nurse of the Society for the Promotion of Hospice Care. She joined the Caritas Institute of Higher Education as Assistant Professor in 2020.

Teaching
Dr Lai has rich experiences in providing post-registration speciality training and teaching in university, hospital and community settings. She always shares her knowledge with experienced healthcare professionals to improve their clinical practices by invitation. Dr Lai has been mainly involved in teaching and providing supervision on various courses of the Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) Programme in CIHE since 2020. She has been appointed as the Programme Leader of Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) (Academic) in September 2021.
Research
Dr Lai has extensive research experience in advanced cancer patients. She is an expert in aromatherapy, meaning-focused intervention, and palliative-related issues. She has received different research-related awards. Such as appreciation for assessment panel members in Hospital Authority Convention, and outstanding free-papers presentation award in Hong Kong Palliative Care Symposium. The current research interests of Dr Lai include palliative care, advanced care planning, symptoms management, palliative home care and dying at home issues. She now focuses on education and training, clinical research and service development.
