Professor TANG brings an exceptional career in global health promotion and public health leadership. He previously served as Coordinator of Health Promotion at the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva, a role he held until his retirement from WHO in 2016. During his tenure from 2002, he led major initiatives including the WHO Global Programme on Health Promotion Effectiveness; served as a core writer for the 2010 Global Status Report on NCD (recommending key "best buys" for NCD prevention); managed the 2014 NCD report; acted as responsible officer for the 8th Global Conference on Health Promotion (advancing Health in All Policies); and was principal author of the WHO Framework for Country Action Across Sectors for Health and Health Equity. He also provided technical leadership for the 9th Global Conference on Health Promotion to support Sustainable Development Goals and contributed to landmark reports such as the 2008 World Health Report on Primary Health Care.
Prior to WHO, Professor TANG practiced evidence-based health promotion starting in 1990 at Southern Sydney Area Health Service (including as Officer in Charge of the Health Promotion Unit), taught at the School of Public Health, University of Sydney (1997–2001), and led World Bank- and WHO-funded capacity-building projects. Earlier, he held senior positions in social services in Hong Kong SAR.
He holds qualifications including Dip SW, MA, Grad Dip in PSM (Health), and PhD; has authored over 65 peer-reviewed articles and reports (h-index of 21); and served as Editorial Advisor to the WHO Bulletin and member of the WHO Ethics Review Committee.
